This is my setup for Vent -- I hear voice com in my ear while my game sounds and music come over the speakers.
Just be care ful if you order one of these sound adapters and make sure you can return it--there are a lot of similar-looking ones that are total crap.
The good ones have either an SSS or C-Media chipset.
I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised when I tested these out. The microphone quality is better than my sennheiser which cost over 200 krone, and I've started using one of these for all my voice com, including phone calls to regular phones through my computer.
These are my preferred type of headset for voice com in gaming, because by plugging them into the USB sound adapter, you can have voice com (I use Ventrilo) in one ear while game sounds come over the speakers, making for a more realistic
experience, plus it's easy to hear your buddies in Ventrilo and you don't have to sacrifice your battle sounds the way you would with headphones.
For Skype and other voice communications, they're also ideal because they give you hands-free communication and don't prevent you from hearing the sounds around you or carrying out conversations with co-workers the way 2-ear headphones would. Skype allows you to select the USB sound adapter for your voice com and have the call ring over your computer speakers.
There's a reason the military, secret service agents, spies, even inter-galactic space warriors use 1-ear headsets rather than 2-ear headphones.
I also have a bluetooth headset I can use for voice com with my computer, but I almost never use it because the hassles of reconnecting it each time I want to use it and battery life and recharging outweigh the benefit of being cordless.
This headset is always plugged in and ready to go, so if I get a Skype call (the ringing sound comes over my speaker because I have the headset plugged into the usb sound adapter), I can just put it on and answer.
These easily switch from right to left ear, and are light and comfortable for long gaming sessions or internet calls.
